Bluff reraising for information
Permalink

In late position I get dealt a King Clubs and 7 Clubs. One other player limps in before me and I decided to limp in too.  Small blind calls and Big Blind checks. There are 4 of us in the pot with $8.

THE FLOP IS
5 clubs, 7 hearts, Jack spades

I've got mid pair with a high kicker and am the last to bet. Small blind checks and Big blind bets 3 big blinds ($6).  The early position player folds and it is my turn.

If I call, I will not have any idea what the Big blind has....I won't know if he paired up the top card on the flop and is already ahead of me or is he bluffing the pot with a 3 BB bet first in to claim the initial pre-flop betting and really did not have top pair..in which case my mid-pair with King kicker is probably be better.

At this point, I decided to reraise the Big blind in a semi-bluff.  I call this a semi-bluff because my reraise is representng a hand better than mid-pair.

If he calls my reraise or goes over the top on my reraise, I will believe he has top pair or something much better than me and dump my hand on the next betting round.  I am willing to risk losing that $15 for the chance to win $14 if he is indeed bluffing himself...which I suspect he is.  If I don't reraise, I lose the opportunity of winning the pot if my read on the players is correct.

So with my reraise of $15, the Big blind has to call the additional $9 that I reraised him with if his $6 flop bet really represents something.  He waits for a few seconds and then folds.

I successfully win $14 with my mid-pair because of my aggressive raising style.
